Transforming two-dimensional fabrics into three-dimensional pieces has driven Bird Ross’s creative process for over 30 years. She says, “Baskets are a synthesis of form and surface. I love combining their raw materials and manipulating their form, embellishing their surface and determining their degree of openness or secrecy. I am drawn to them as personal objects and as containers for concepts or common items. They determine space. They define containment. Currently I’m working with single sheets that can be addressed as if it were clay. It’s a conversation where I’m asking what form will it take both as I manipulate the materials, but also as the materials resist my directions. How will my skills with the materials and the sewing process feed the conversation, and also make room for what I don’t know and what is to come.”
